The Provincial Snowboard Series returns to Sun Peaks Jan. 21 to 22 for its second year, featuring two separate slopestyle events over the course of the weekend. From the coaches to the athletes, everyone’s looking forward to the series.
Cathy Astofooroff, B.C. Snowboard Association’s executive director, brought the series to Sun Peaks last year for the first time.
“We hadn’t been up for a freestyle event before, so it was really nice to see the park,” says Astofooroff. “It was in great shape, very well maintained and the mountain was very supportive of us.”
The Snowboard Series events are open to all ages, and are part of a series whereby snowboarders accumulate Ticket to Ride (TTR) points, similar to FIS ranking in ski events.
“We do an all encompassing event and divide the final results to award different age groups of 14 and under, 15 to 18, and 19 and over,” says Astofooroff.
New this year are cash prizes. Purses of $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third place will be awarded to both male and female competitors both days.
“We also do draw prizes, something that everybody can win,” says Astofooroff.
Last year 50 people attended the event, including members of the association’s provincial and developmental teams. Astofooroff is looking forward to welcoming even more teams and individual competitors from around the province to Sun Peaks for this year’s series.
The events will be held at the Rock Star Terrain Park, Jan. 21 and 22.
