Publisher’s Note – So long but never goodbye

Brandi Schier steps down as publisher of Sun Peaks Independent News.

Last week I had the pleasure of hosting our most recent all candidates election forum. It was one of many such events we’ve held over the years where the community of Sun Peaks really shines. People are interested and active regarding issues and the future of their home, while others are stepping up to serve their community. Guiding these conversations has always been a highlight of my role as publisher, and that’s why it was especially emotional to close the event with the news that I am stepping back from Sun Peaks Independent News after almost 12 years.

I was especially touched by the response in the room, and appreciate the words of support and kind wishes more than you can know. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I will be donating the SPIN publishing assets to a non-profit to carry the community’s journalism into its next chapter.

Over the years, folks have asked me how a community the size of Sun Peaks can sustain a news outlet. My answer has always been it’s due to the unique economic conditions created through strong real estate and tourism, combined with business owners and residents who truly understand the value of trusted local news and its audience.

While this is still true, to be candid it has shifted in recent years. And as the media and economic landscapes continue to also change radically, we’ve decided we must change along with it.

Donating these community assets on the eve of SPIN’s 25th year of publishing will give the best chance to one day celebrate 50 years of publishing and beyond. Looking through the lens of continued community impact and long-term stewardship, belonging to a charity will open many doors. With advertising and government support less reliant than in the recent past, we’re choosing to invite the wider community to keep this public service going strong into 2027 and beyond.

This decision has not been taken lightly, especially because of my strong connection to this outlet and community. This business, role, and place have defined so much of my working life, but the time has come to make a change both personally and for the long-term benefit of the organization. Over the past twelve years we’ve weathered so much together, from the pandemic to wildfires, and I believe this is the best option to face whatever lies ahead.

While I’ll be stepping back from my daily operational role, I will continue to support this transition as a member of the board. Justin Moore, the current sales and partnership specialist, will be the new interim publisher while we work to make this change by the end of year. I have no doubt you are in good hands as Justin’s commitment to community, passion for supporting small businesses, and dedication to journalism are all very evident. Reporter Noelle Suzuki will continue to dedicate each day to reporting on the issues that matter the most to Sun Peaks, of course supported by editor Hollie Ferguson.

They are among an amazing group of young editors, journalists, and others who I’ve had the privilege of working with, many of whom have gone on to have successful and impactful careers. I’m so fortunate to have played a small role in their path. I’m very grateful for this team to take up the reins and ask you to give them the same support and grace I’ve been benefited from over the years.

I also have so much gratitude for the many opportunities SPIN has given me and all the lessons, skills, and relationships I’ve developed along the way. Thank you for allowing me a space to contribute meaningfully through my work, for supporting me as I’ve learned and grown, and for always showing your appreciation for the impact SPIN has here.

In true journalistic fashion, I’ve left writing this to the last moment so while some things may be changing, clearly my reporter’s habits are still strong along with my passion for building a solid future for independent community journalism. Please get in touch with any questions about the transition or the future model, especially if you or others you know are interested in contributing to build and support the future of local news in Sun Peaks.

This place will always be home to me, and while it’s bittersweet to say goodbye, my ultimate hope is that I’ve left you with stronger local news and a better understanding of the mountain town we all love. This chapter is a hard one to close, but like everyone who leaves Sun Peaks, I know I always have a special place to return to chase powder days with friends, apres the day away on a sunny patio, and be enveloped by the warm sense of community that grows here.
