Richmond murder victim a former Sun Peaks resident

Alex RenneyMurder investigators have released the name of the body found in Richmond on Monday, February 23.
Alex Renney, 20, a former Sun Peaks resident, was found dead at about 6 a.m. by an employee arriving for work on River Road, between No. 6 and No. 7 roads.
According to the police’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), Renney was last seen Sunday night.
IHIT said investigators are still trying to narrow down the timeline of Renney’s last movements and who he was in contact with prior to his death.
IHIT said they believe the death was targeted and not a result of a random attack.
Renney attended school in Vancouver, before moving to Sun Peaks, where he lived on-and-off for more than a year, through 2013 and 2014.
“Sun Peaks was a highlight in an otherwise difficult life for a kid from South Surrey with a troubled past,” said Cage, a family friend.
Renney originally moved to Sun Peaks to get away from his troubles in Vancouver, and eventually landed himself a job working up north.
“When he came back to Sun Peaks after that, he had really turned his life around. He bought his snowboard pass and all his gear, and spent the season on our couch in between jobs,” Cage said.
“He loved Sun Peaks. He loved being here. He was just as happy as could be during his time here.”
Friends in Sun Peaks described him as “an amazing kid” and “extremely loving and loyal friend,” who would be greatly missed.
“He wasn’t the best mountain biker, but he would launch off any jump you put him on,” a friend said.
IHIT is asking anyone who may have information to call the IHIT tipline on 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email ihittipline@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
