The North Face Dirty Feet race series came to Sun Peaks on September 6 and 7 to host two days of events in the mountainous terrain around the resort.
The Ultra Dirty 50 kilometre race and relay kicked things off on day one, with competitors racing solo or in teams to complete this mammoth race. The course led racers through the village and to the top of Tod Mountain and Mt. Morrisey, before finishing in the village.
The Ice Cream Truck Chasers co-ed team, comprised of Jon Sheperd, Steve Brown, Faryn Brown, and Shawn Frain were the first competitors across the line, declaring a time of 5:02:45.
The first women’s team across the line were the Merlot Musketeers (Mia Douglas, Diane Butler, Leslie Stevens and Joanne Wild) with a time of 5:09:22. The first men’s team was Team FOG (Fast Old Guys) represented by Charlie Bruce, Patrick McDonald, Bruce Mitchell and Tony Buckley with a time of 5:30:18.
Dan Whitford and Sun Peaks’ own Nikki Kirton finished first for the two person teams division, with their team, Black Dog, recording a time of 5:37:27.
Steve Sellers of Canmore was the first men’s solo competitor across the line with a time of 5:16:41. Pemberton’s Heather Munroe set a determined pace of 5:56:36 to take first place in the women’s solo division.
September 7 saw the 16 km King and Queen of the Mountain, with competitors racing up to mid-mountain and back. Ian McNairn of Calgary was crowned King of the Mountain with a time of 1:18:23, while Kamloops runner Yvonne Timewell timed well to secure her spot as Queen of the Mountain with a finishing time of 1:33:08.

Phil Hiom, event organizer for Dirty Feet, said conditions on the day were perfect, with blue skies and warm temperatures making for an excellent racing weekend.
Hiom said Sun Peaks continues to serve as a great venue for the Dirty Feet races, with a great network of trails, beautiful scenery and a great resort community.
The next Dirty Feet race in Sun Peaks will be a snowshoe fun run and is scheduled to take place in March.
