The community of Sun Peaks is celebrating the successful bid of Sun Peaks and Kamloops for the 2018 BC Winter Games. Sun Peaks will host the Games’ alpine events welcoming the province’s top calibre athletes to its slopes.
“The BC Games are an essential step in the development of B.C.’s high-performance athletes . . . coaches and communities involved. The economic impact on the host community is substantial — over $2 million — and the social impact is probably even larger,” said Bill Bennett, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.
The BC Summer and Winter Games represent the largest multi-sport competitions held in the province. They’re a developmental platform for many athletes who often go on to higher levels of competition such as the Canada Summer and Winter Games and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Sun Peaks and Kamloops were chosen due to their high quality amenities, in both athletic facilities and accommodation options.
Home to the Nancy Greene International Race Centre, Sun Peaks’ racing facilities are exceptionally well designed and maintained. Every winter Sun Peaks draws race organizations from across the country and around the world.
The community is looking forward to welcoming athletes, their families, coaches and spectators to Sun Peaks.
