Sun Peaks delays opening to Nov. 27

Unseasonably warm weather delays the start of ski season, but Sun Peaks remains optimistic as snowmaking, race training and winter planning continue behind the scenes.

Unseasonably warm temperatures have pushed back the start of the 2025-26 winter season at Sun Peaks Resort. The resort announced that opening day has been moved to Thursday, Nov. 27, as current snow coverage is insufficient for public skiing.

While higher elevations have seen some accumulation, conditions are not yet adequate to safely open terrain. Resort officials remain optimistic that skiers and snowboarders will be back on the slopes by next week with colder weather expected in the coming days.

Guests who purchased lift tickets, rentals or lessons for dates between Nov. 22 and 26 will automatically receive full refunds. Those with accommodation reservations are advised to contact their hotel or property directly to discuss next steps.

“Delaying opening weekend is something we rarely have to do,” Aaron Macdonald, chief marketing and communications officer for Sun Peaks Resort, said in a press release. “Our extensive summer grooming program usually allows us to open with less snow than many other destinations.

“But the unusually warm temperatures across the Pacific Northwest mean we need to wait for improved conditions. The snow will come and we’re excited to welcome guests back very soon.”

The new opening date remains subject to weather and daily assessments by mountain operations. Visitors are encouraged to stay up to date through the resort’s website, social media or e-newsletter alerts.

Although the general public will have to wait a little longer, Sun Peaks has already welcomed competitive athletes. Thanks to this year’s expanded snowmaking system and snow storage program, the Nancy Greene International Race Centre opened on Nov. 8 to ski teams.

More than 1,200 racers are expected to train there this winter, providing a significant economic boost to the resort community.

Following last year’s record-breaking season, with over 4,000 attendees on the opening day, Sun Peaks is preparing for another winter, with a full lineup of events and new offerings from restaurants and venues throughout the village.
