Flags are being pulled out, skis are being waxed and families are teaming up to represent their countries in the 5th Annual Travelplan Sun Peaks Family Cup, taking place Jan. 5 to 9, 2011.
The Family Cup is the one event every year where competitors range from four years old to 71 years old as individuals, families and teams from any country don their national colours to complete in the recreational Giant Slalom. Over 170 competitors from Canada, Australia and New Zealand competed in the 2010 Family Cup, with Australia taking home the top prize.
Each competitor gets one run on the blue and the red courses and in addition to the top three competitors given awards in their respective divisions, there are also prizes for the top three with the smallest time difference between their two runs.
Leading up to race day, there are a ton of other events, including a children’s obstacle course and a cross-country ski race. It all kicks off Wed., Jan. 5 with the High Roller Mountain Marathon which will have participants visiting mountain checkpoints to roll some dice and try and collect the most points after all stops. The prizes for that event will be awarded at the Delta Sun Peaks Cocktail Welcome Party that same evening.
