Sun Peaks Painting on keeping mountain homes maintained

Mountain weather is tough on paint jobs. Here’s what experts suggest to keep homes in Sun Peaks looking great.

Sun Peaks Painting started locally and for the most part, stays local with over 90 per cent of customers residing in the municipality, Whitecroft or Heffley.

“We will go to Kamloops for a friend, if they ask really, really nicely,” co-owner Tyler Hall joked.

Hall started Sun Peaks Painting with his father in 2008, seeing a need for interior and exterior painting services on the mountain. Since then, the operation has grown to include a number of commercial facilities and residential homes.

A family affair, Hall is quick to mention his wife Kaelina Hall and dad Nick Chevrefils who are integral to meeting all of Sun Peaks’ exterior painting needs in the short seasons without snow or rain.

“It’s very much a family business,” he said.

While Sun Peaks Painting can do interiors year-round, the mountain climate in Sun Peaks limits when exterior walls, decks and railings can get a refresh. That same climate also requires a specific type of care and expertise to keep homes looking their best, Hall said.

“The temperature changes up here can accelerate wear and tear on wood exteriors, particularly like cedar siding,” Hall explained. “If the wood deteriorates, the longer you let it go, the bigger a job it’s going to be when you do get around to doing it.”

Hall advised putting maintenance coats on exterior wood every three years, or as needed, to combat the wind, snow and rain so prevalent to the area.

For folks looking to have exterior painting done, he suggested calling to schedule services in the early spring, as he works to accommodate all of his customers before the next winter season.

When it comes to interiors, often customers in Sun Peaks are looking for more modern colours to replace older yellows, browns and greens.

There is one common thread: “a classic white.”

“You can’t go wrong with a classic white like Swiss coffee or European White. We find a lot of our customers are looking for something like that.”

But the main aspect he notices in Sun Peaks is the quality of builds he paints.

“People have really nice homes up here, and their standards are high,” he said. “We like to think that we can offer the reliable service and quality results with a special attention to detail to make a high-end home look great.”
