Sun Peaks Volunteer Fire Department Society is planning for Sun Peaks’ annual firefighter’s gala, starting with a call for a charity organization to be this year’s beneficiary. The gala will take place on Saturday, Nov. 21 with the proposal period ending on May 15.

The Sun Peaks Volunteer Fire Department Society is requesting a one-page synopsis from each organization outlining where the funding will be allocated. All applications should be submitted to SPVFDS@gmail.com

Tyne Roberts, the society president said that to be the beneficiary, organizations need to be local or support the Sun Peaks area.

“We really try to keep it community focused and local, but we’re willing to stretch out if that organization does in the same way end up benefiting our community,” Roberts said.

Since 2007 the firefighter’s gala has been put on to honour, celebrate and thank firefighters for all their hard work in the Sun Peaks community.

The society started using the gala as a fundraising opportunity to raise money for a new mountain rescue truck, before switching to support local charities, Tyne said.

Each year, two charities are selected and continue for a total of two years. The society cycles through the organizations with an overlap, meaning one organization from last year will be in its second year and the new organization chosen this year will continue to be the beneficiary in next year’s gala.

This will be the Sun Peaks Volunteer Fire Department society’s second year acting as one of the beneficiaries.

Charities chosen for the gala also have a few responsibilities if chosen to be beneficiary, including sourcing auction item donations for the live and silent auction.

Additionally, the beneficiaries will do a small presentation explaining what their charity is all about.

“We just really appreciate the continued support that we get from the community and the interest we have in these galas,” Roberts said. “It’s because of the community that we get to keep putting this on, and we keep getting to give back to the communities and supporting local charities.”
