A bout of heavy rain couldn’t deter 22 eager locals from showing their community pride by cleaning up garbage and recycling around Sun Peaks on April 10.
Despite the adverse weather more garbage and recycling was collected during this Delta Sun Peaks organized cleanup than at last year’s event.
“We had a total of 167 pounds of garbage and 37 lbs of recycling brought in and sorted. To compare, last year we brought in 133 lbs of garbage and 25 lbs of recycling,” said Melissa Bahula from the Delta Sun Peaks Resort.
The second cleanup on April 16 added another 81 lbs of garbage and 13 lbs of recycling.
Coming up next is the 16th annual Village Trash Bash on Thursday May 16 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
Participants are asked to meet at Bento’s Day Lodge at 4:30 p.m. to pick up garbage bags, recycling bags and route maps. Gloves aren’t provided, so be sure to pack your own, and dress for any weather.
Following the cleanup the Sun Peaks Volunteer Firefighters’ Society will provide a free hot dog and hamburger barbecue for volunteers from 7 p.m. Tourism Sun Peaks asks guests to bring an appetizer, salad or dessert to contribute to the potluck.
