The referendum vote held over the weekend yielded a 209 to 79 vote in favour of turning Sun Peaks into a resort municipality.
Voter turnout is just over half of the estimated 500 residents that live year-round in Sun Peaks.
Sun Peaks residents, including anyone who’s lived in Sun Peaks for the last 30 days prior to election, and non-resident property owners were allowed to cast a ballot.
“We would have to wait for (Community and Rural Development Minister Bill Bennett) to make a decision on if and when a municipal election will be held,” said TNRD’s Chief Election Officer Lyle Huntley. “We just have to wait and see what happens.”
