The Community Association of Whitecroft is petitioning for a speed limit reduction from 50 kilometres per hour to 30 kilometres per hour in the village.
Future lobbying efforts will likely be necessary, according to association president Kieth Lyall, who hopes the petition will help raise awareness and community support.
“Fifty kilometers an hour is pretty darn fast for a road like this,” he said. “It’s narrow, visibility is limited, and with kids, pets and even horses around, it’s very difficult to maintain that speed safely through the village.”
The Ministry of Transportation has jurisdiction over the roadway, and lobbying efforts have led to discussions on implementing speed bumps, which would require funding from the community or possibly the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD).
According to Lyall, Area P director Lee Morris, has been understanding to these concerns and supportive in the motion to reduce the speed limit, and was the first to address the Ministry of Transportation with these concerns.
“Traffic calming measures like speed bumps have been proven to effectively manage and reduce speeding in residential areas,” Andrew Lawrence shared in the petition posting. “Implementing these changes will not only save the lives of pets but will also significantly enhance the safety and well-being of everyone in our community.
Going forward, Lyall hopes to build further momentum, and add to the 165 names already signed to the petition. The TNRD has supported the association in the past, and he said he is optimistic that continued collaboration could help push this issue forward.
The association will submit the petition to the TNRD representative April 23.
