Whitocroft’s yearly Nanci Wilson Park fundraiser is back this Friday, June 13, and organizers are inviting everyone to join at the Cahilty Creek Kitchen and Taproom for an evening filled with music, food and community spirit, all in support of a long-awaited park.
“It’s just a fun evening,” president of the Community Association of Whitecroft (CAW), Kaitlyn Lamotte said. “There’s going to be a barbecue buffet dinner, a live auction, a little bit of live music, 50/50 draw and just a place for us as a community to gather and support the good cause.”
For years, CAW has dreamed of creating a park and playground that would offer families from Whitecroft, Sun Peaks and Heffley Creek a safe space to gather, play and build memories.
That dream is now beginning to take shape.
Thanks to a generous land donation by the Nanci Wilson family, CAW, together with the Whitecroft Water Society (WWC), now has a dedicated two-acre site. The land will accommodate both a new community well with a filtration system underground and a community park. Plans for the site include a playground, a concrete pad for sports like basketball and hockey and a pump track.
While the project is rooted in Whitecroft, Lamotte emphasized the park is meant to be enjoyed by surrounding communities as well.
“Being just a little bit down the hill, we tend to get spring a couple months sooner than Sun Peaks, as well as we stay in fall for a bit longer [than Sun Peaks] and the community of Heffley Creek as well to enjoy. ”
The community has shown strong support for the initiative over the years.
“It’s very positive,” Lamotte said. “Being that everyone can see that it would be really nice to have one communal area for all the kids to go and play. It’s just a place to gather. We do little community events here in Whitecroft as well.”
Following this year’s fundraiser, WCA will continue working towards its goal with the help of other upcoming events, including the annual fire department gala and through corporate sponsorships.
“If anyone is at all interested in donating or being a corporate sponsor, we do have a sponsorship package available and could contact whitecroftassociation@gmail.com.”
Organizers also extend thanks to key sponsors. Vike Real Estate Group is the title sponsor of the fundraiser, with Rangeland Meats providing the dinner’s protein.
