Winter art workshops a success

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAArt Zone Sun Peaks has been keeping active this winter, offering a series of workshops designed to showcase, share, and develop local talents.

Art Zone held two successful workshops in January, a life writing workshop and an acrylic painting workshop, hosted by Ruth Wiebe and Liz Derksen, and a popular Habotai silk scarf workshop in February, run by Judy Kalas.

Coming up on March 17 will be a jewelry making workshop, run by Charlene Hall. Hall has been designing and creating jewelry for over 20 years, and has worked with several respected Canadian designers.

Connie McKnight, Art Zone communications officer, said the winter workshops really highlighted the local talent available in Sun Peaks.

“They are usually half-day workshops to get people involved and trying different things,” McKnight said.

Art Zone is also offering Open Studios each month in winter, with the next event taking place on Monday, March 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Cahilty Lodge. Entry is free for Art Zone members or $5 for non-members to drop in. These Open Studios give artists a chance to meet up, share ideas, and work on their projects in a relaxed, informal setting.

Art Zone board meetings are also open to the public during winter. The next meeting is scheduled for March 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Cahilty Lodge. McKnight said anyone is welcome to come along and share ideas or learn more about the organization at these meetings.
