The Bikinis for Breast Cancer fundraising event was held on Saturday, April 4, in Sun Peaks, and helped to raise more than $1,700 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation — despite initially being cancelled by event organizers.
Fiona Fache said she had registered for the event in support of a friend.
“Recently, one of our Health Centre volunteers was diagnosed with breast cancer. We also have other breast cancer survivors that volunteer with us, so I thought I’d take part in Bikinis for Breast Cancer,” said Fache.
“A friend of mine, Lorraine Korobanik, agreed to accompany me. We registered and began fundraising. We had raised a little over $1,000 when we were told the Sun Peaks event had been cancelled.”
The Sun Peaks group were still keen for the event to go ahead, and banded together to ensure the fundraiser would continue.
“An event like this gets people’s attention. I put out notices on social media to let people know we were still on board and encouraged people to join us, with or without a bikini.”
Fache was delighted with the turnout. A torn ligament in her knee prevented her from skiing on the day, but around a dozen women, and a few men, donned bikinis and pink balloons for a fun, social ski down 5 Mile.
“I’d like to thank everyone who took part, as well as family and friends who helped get everyone organized. I’d also like to thank my husband Steve and nephew Garrett for photographing and filming the event.”
The event raised $1,740 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
