Colin Cannon, a long-time member of Sun Peaks Fire and Rescue (SPFR) and the former fire prevention officer, will take on the role of Fire Chief for Sun Peaks.
Cannon said he was honored, humbled, and excited to take on the new role.
“I’m extremely proud of the progression Sun Peaks Fire and Rescue has taken over the past 10 years. We’ve pushed ourselves to become such a professional department in all aspects of the service we provide, and it’s those big boots that I step in to,” Cannon told SPIN.
“For a small department, we have a very good reputation in the industry for the services we provide to Sun Peaks and the surrounding area.
“I look forward to working with Sun Peaks municipality in continuing to provide a fantastic community to live in.”
Cannon’s appointment comes following the departure of Chief Bill Stoner to Squamish earlier this year.
Cannon arrived in Sun Peaks around 18 years ago and became involved with SPFR shortly after.
“People often say that a fire department is a person’s second family, and that’s very true in Sun Peaks. I feel very strongly that if you can, you should try to give back to the community you live in.”
For the past seven years, Cannon has worked as the fire prevention officer for Sun Peaks, where he was responsible for promoting fire safety and implemented programs such as free smoke alarm testing in the community.
Looking towards the future, Cannon said he’s extremely keen to continue to grow the department, while retaining the quality and professionalism SPFR is known for.
“I want to develop a larger fire department family. We need more bodies to ensure the sustainability of the fire department.”
Cannon said being involved with the fire department was about more than just the traditional firefighter role.
“I’m certainly looking for firefighters, but we also have some non-traditional roles and I’m looking for anyone interested in those roles to become a part of our Emergency Operations Committee (EOC).”
The EOC will come into play during emergency situations, and will be responsible for logistics, planning, communications, and the behind-the-scenes roles that are crucial to support the firefighters on the ground.
Cannon encouraged anyone looking to get involved with the fire hall to drop by during business hours to look at a recruitment pack.
