Family Cup returns for sixth year

This year’s Family Cup welcomes competitors to participate in giant slalom, an obstacle course race, and a three mountain marathon.

With the cry “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi, oi, oi!” ringing through the village you’ll know that the Family Cup has returned to Sun Peaks for its sixth year. The event, held each January, attracts families from around the world for a week-long series of ski and snowboard racing.

“In Australia, January is the month of school (summer) holidays and thousands of Australians, particularly family groups, head overseas for their vacation,” says Steve Cooper, chairperson of Interschools Snowsport Australia, a group that organizes the Family Cup.

This year’s Family Cup welcomes competitors to participate in giant slalom, an obstacle course race, and a three mountain marathon. Last year’s Family Cup drew approximately 100 competitors.

Families are at the heart of the Family Cup and while the Australians have often gone home with the winning title, the event is open to everyone.

“That’s probably the biggest message,” says Christopher Nicolson, Tourism Sun Peaks’ president. “It’s open to everybody!”
