After embarking on an international surrogacy journey, Meghan Kolodka has no regrets.

A Sun Peaks Yoga instructor and personal trainer, Kolodka gave birth in July 2023 to a 8lbs, 9 oz boy as a surrogate for a couple from Ireland. While she wishes she could be a surrogate again, Kolodka is more than satisfied with the gift she’s given to the child’s fathers, Damien Buckley-Davidson and Mark Buckley-Davidson.

“I wish I could do it again, but it’s a lot to give up,” Kolodka explained. “At this point in my life, I am not ready to put my family through that again – they were so supportive the first time but you never know what’s going to happen… I’m ready to focus on my family and career and I’ll stick to donating blood for now.”

A highly altruistic person, Kolodka wanted to be a surrogate for years before she decided to go through the process. Her previous pregnancies were fairly straightforward, and she knows having children isn’t an easy task for all families.

The journey was also an opportunity to teach her two daughters about different ways to make a family.

“They had the opportunity to see that all families are different and sometimes it’s not always easy to bring a child into the world.”

While she doesn’t expect her daughters to follow in her footsteps, she does want them to understand their actions can help other people.

She advises anyone who wants to become a surrogate to have a strong support system and research the agency in-depth.

“You need to be in a place where you are very certain that this is the right path for you because surrogacy is not for everybody…Make sure that it’s with a company that has a good reputation and that your intended parents are on the same page with you with absolutely everything,” she said.

The two families are still in contact and hope to visit each other in the years to come, travelling to Ireland and skiing in Sun Peaks.
