Sun Peaks Community Daycare opening is tentatively slated for next week.
Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality (SPMRM) invited the public to view the space on Nov. 14 before the opening day later this month. Featuring rooms designed for varying age groups, a food preparation space and an outdoor playground, the newly built daycare centre is a long-awaited piece of community infrastructure for families.
The open house was an opportunity to welcome the community into the space daycare manager Janice Hoppenreys told SPIN.

“A lot of community members came to check out the daycare, and a lot of families brought their children who will be attending,” Hoppenreys said. “Everyone was really excited…and they’re very excited for us to open and start bringing their kids.”
The licensing inspection from Interior Health required a few last-minute items be ticked off before the daycare would receive its license, Hoppenreys noted. The municipality is hopeful the space will open by next week.
The long-awaited facility is funded by a provincial grant for $1.8 million and will assist parents in the community who pay for private childcare. Costs for care depend on the child’s age.
Some staff are still needed for the facility to have a full capacity of 50 children, and individuals can apply on SPMRM’s website.
The facility will be open Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a school-aged program is slated for Fridays.
