After a 26 centimetre powder day, Sun Peaks has reached the 200 cm mid-mountain snow base. This level of snow base has only been exceed by this date three times in the resort’s history, making for exceptional skiing and riding conditions approaching provincial spring breaks.
“This signals an exceptionally good snow year here,” says Jamie Tattersfield, head of Sun Peaks’ Mountain Operations. “Our alpine snow base has been above 200 cm for many weeks but this latest snowfall has put the mid-mountain snow levels above two meters as well.”
This record has only been exceeded this early in the season three times before — January of 1974, February of 1997 and January of 1999.
Sun Peaks has been recording snow data at their mid-mountain weather plot since 1972. It’s located just above the top of the Sunburst Chairlift in a wind sheltered area at an elevation of 1,855 metres (6086 feet).
