Sun Peaks Fire and Rescue (SPFR) responded to a structure fire at an apartment building in Sun Peaks village on Tuesday evening, with a fast response and an activated sprinkler system helping to limit damage and prevent injuries.

SPFR was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 3300 Village Pl. at approximately 8:21 p.m. One command unit, two fire engines and a ladder truck were sent to the scene.

Upon arrival, the incident commander observed smoke coming from a ground-floor apartment unit. SPFR’s captain James Griffiths said the building’s sprinkler system had already activated, significantly slowing the spread of the fire before crews entered the unit.

Firefighters located an electrical-related fire inside the apartment, which had largely been suppressed by the sprinkler system. Crews ensured the fire was fully extinguished and conducted a thorough inspection of the building to confirm there was no fire extension beyond the affected unit.

“The combination of a quick response and a properly functioning sprinkler system significantly minimized damage to the rest of the structure,” Griffiths said.

No injuries were reported and damage was contained to the individual apartment unit.

Griffiths is using the incident as a reminder to residents about the importance of fire safety. SPFR encourages all residents to ensure smoke alarms are working properly and that all life-safety systems receive required annual inspections. Residents are also urged to follow best practices when charging lithium-ion battery-powered devices such as electric vehicles and batteries, which continue to be a growing fire risk.
