After an aggressive cougar was spotted on the Embleton Mountain trail network on Aug. 20, near the east end of Heffley Lake, there is a temporary closure in place on the trails.
A Facebook post in a local group brought to light a couple’s experience with the cougar on Embleton Mountain and warned others to beware of the animal. According to the original post, the cougar had come within six feet of the hikers and only left them alone after repeated attempts to discourage the animal, including charging at with a knife.
Conservation officers were called to the area, according to comments on Facebook.
Heffley Lake Community Association was asked by officials in Kamloops with Recreation Sites and Trails BC to spread via social media news of the trails’ closure yesterday. As of today, Aug. 21, the status has been updated online at Recreation Sites and Trails BC, identifying the area as “closed due to aggressive cougar protecting its kill in the area.”
