Trail Champs running to new venue

The team at Dirty Feet Trail Series will bring the 2015 Canadian National 50 km Trail Championships to Sun Peaks on September 12 — marking the first time the event has been held in Western Canada for several years.

The Dirty Feet 50km Ultra-Marathon took place on September 6.
Dirty Feet runners get set for the Canadian National 50km Trail Championships on Sept. 12.

Phil Hiom from Dirty Feet said he was pleased to bring the event to Sun Peaks.

“It’s awesome. We’re excited for Western Canadians to have the opportunity to race on home turf,” he said.

Sun Peaks worked out as the venue of choice for a few reasons, according to Hiom. It fits in well with the timing of the event, as Dirty Feet usually holds a 50 km race in the resort each September.

“It was good timing, and the course is a great course for the event. It’s a very runnable course. There’s elevation but it’s all a runnable elevation.”

Hiom said the course will be similar to last year’s cloverleaf-style design, taking runners up to mid-mountain, over trails to the top of Tod Mountain, then back to the village before finally heading both up and down Mt. Morrisey.

While it’s a long course, the design means it can easily be broken into four legs for relay teams, while solo runners can leave drop bags with gear at the intersections of each leg.

For competitors who aren’t up to a full 50 km event, the 21 km King and Queen of the Mountain is taking place on September 13, along with 10 km and 5 km fun runs for all ability levels.
