Anyone living in the Whitecroft area, or the Upper Louis Creek valley near Sun Peaks, has certainly come across what’s been affectionately called the “car wash” or the “never ending puddle” that flows across McGillivray Creek Road between Heffley Louis Creek Road and Upper Louis Creek Road.
This persistent puddle of water originates from Christian Creek; it flows from Heffley Lake into Louis Creek just south of the village of Whitecroft.
Concerns have been raised by residents about possible negative effects of this standing water on fish populations. According to the Department of Fisheries (DFO), this water course is a normal flow and fluctuates annually depending on the level of the water table in the region. With the road nearly at ground water level, a higher than normal water table creates a situation where creek water flows over the road as the small culvert under the road is unable to handle the increased volume.
A spokesperson from DFO stated they are aware of the current flow situation and they’ll continue to have discussions with the Ministry of Transportation and the owner of the adjacent land to find an amicable solution to the problem.
