Go Skate Day, a fundraiser for the Sun Peaks Skate Park Foundation, will bring food, music, games and more to Sun Peaks Centre Stage June 21 from 1 p.m to 3 p.m.
In the last stages of developing a skate park in Sun Peaks, the foundation is seeking funds and stoking excitement for the final stretch.
“The main goal for this year is just [to] keep awareness that the Sun Peaks Skate Park Foundation is still active and committed to getting a skate park in this community and getting everybody together for a good time,” Sonya Nasilowski, vice president of the foundation said.
This initiative has been in the works for over a decade, and the Sun Peaks Skate Park Foundation acquired land in 2024 beside the tennis courts off of Parking Lot 5.
Peter Wilson, president of the foundation, brought a presentation to council April 28, requesting collaboration and support to move the project to completion.
Providing an overview and timeline, Wilson shared what the foundation has achieved and where it is in the process of bringing the skate park from concept to reality.
As of 2026, the foundation has completed all the “heavy lifting” to get to the point of shovels in the ground. Now the final design and 3D rendering are complete and the registered charity is seeking fundraising, sponsorships and grants.
The presentation included a slide with a “path to advancement,” which stated that “progress is currently limited by the absence of a finalized municipal agreement,” but Wilson stated there would be conversations between the foundation and municipality at a later date.
According to the slide, “many grant opportunities require a collaboration with the municipality to submit applications,” and “sponsorship and fundraising efforts depend on an agreement and progress plan being in place.”
Additionally, the foundation has partnered with Radius Skateparks for the design of the park, aiming to build this summer with hopes of support and funding which events like Go Skate Day can provide.
DJ D-Funkt will be hitting the decks with some daytime tunes to keep the energy going throughout the event. Alongside mini ramps and exciting games with prizes, there will also be a BBQ with food for all ages.
Go Skate Day is a free event using the municipality’s mobile skate park. Donations are welcome and will go toward developing the park.
“It’s more about just bringing the community together, letting people skate, keeping the stoke high,” Nasilowski said.
