Run Like a Girl returns for a second year, bringing 400 participants to Sun Peaks to compete in the Top of the World Ultra on June 27.
Runners can choose a 50 kilometre, 28 kilometre or 17 kilometre route with options to join virtually as well. Registration closes on June 19 and includes a five dollar donation fee, finisher medal, finish line party with food and drinks, marked trails, a race bib and draw prizes.
“Although it’s Run Like a Girl, it is open to all genders,” Liz Wilkinson, director of events and partnerships at Sun Peaks Resort LPP said.
This event will raise money for the Sun Peaks Mountain Rescue Society, a non-profit organization providing training and resources for the community of Sun Peaks and its first responders.
“I hear it time and time again from athletes that they have thoroughly enjoyed their time in Sun Peaks, and it’s due to the community and all the businesses and the community members just making everyone feel welcome,” Wilkinson said.
Run Like a Girl is accepting volunteers up until race day, who will help with running the event, but also get perks such as food, draw prizes, swag and discounts on future events.
There is a wide range of volunteering opportunities including course marshaling, assisting with water stations, helping with set up/tear down, audio set up and more.
“Volunteers are the backbone of all events. We couldn’t run any of our events without the dedication that’s shown by all of our volunteers to get out there and spend a full day out on a course,” Wilkinson said.
Bradley Munro, a dedicated Sun Peaks volunteer who was one of the winners of the Mountain Man Award given to outstanding community members and volunteers, shared his experience volunteering in the Sun Peaks community.
“The athletes are what make it great,” he said. “They always say thank you for the support and we try to make it as easy as possible for the guests. The other volunteers and events staff are a great crew to work with.”
“There’s a lot of camaraderie,” Wilkinson added. “[Volunteers] have fun, they enjoy themselves and they also get to participate in their sport or be able to watch their sport and observe what’s going on.”
Events like Run Like a Girl also bring visitors to the resort during the quiet shoulder season, something that helps give local businesses a boost and the mountain more awareness.
“People come here for their passion to follow their sport, and they might never have come to Sun Peaks if that particular event… wasn’t held here,” Wilkinson said.
The resort is also offering a discount code for The Sun Peaks Grand Hotel to registered participants. For more information, visit sunpeaksresort.com.
