B.C. Family Day draws in record numbers

Penguins
Sun Peaks’ celebrations for B.C.’s first Family Day brought in a record number of skiers and boarders. The main celebrations took place Sunday, February 10 next to the Village Platter lift and included a dance party, face painting, and balloon animals by Uncle Chris the Clown.

The Penguin Slide Dual was the main event. Participants dressed up in penguin suits before racing head-to-head down a miniature dual slalom course sliding on their stomachs across the finish line.

The crowd seemed impressed with the celebrations.

“I especially like the (activities) that they organized for the kids. The activities like this, it’s great,” said Iwona Szczepanski, whose daughter participated in the Penguin Slide Dual event.

The new holiday was a success for the resort, with skier visits up 45 per cent, and hotel stays up 60 per cent over the same weekend last year.
