Cahilty Creek Kitchen & Taproom will host a fundraiser for Blake Morris on Friday, March 1, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. to help support his journey to Ontario, where he competes at junior nationals and the NorAm freestyle competitions.

Morris began boarding at six years old and competes with Sun Peaks Freestyle Club. Between balancing school and competitive snowboarding, the 13-year-old works as a dishwasher and a backline cook at Cahilty

“He’s been with us for just over a year now and he’s just a real go-getter, [a] really hard worker, always willing to learn,” Cahilty co-owner Yolanda Dye said. “He saved all his money and has paid for himself to go.”

To show their appreciation for his hard work, Cahilty will donate a portion of apres sold at the event and staff have donated some of their tips towards his costs.

Cash donations are also welcome at the event to support the athlete.

His work ethic and desire to support himself inspired Dye and she wants to see the community give back to youth.

Morris doesn’t have a goal in mind for how much the fundraiser will raise, but he said, “anything can help.”

In terms of competition goals, Morris is aiming high.

“For my age and my age category, probably podium is my goal and then just have fun,” Morris said.

He previously competed at junior nationals in Calgary but this is his first time travelling to Ontario.

Morris heads to Ontario with his teammates on March 3 and returns on March 12.
