For singer/songwriter, Dan Oig, entertaining the Sun Peaks crowd this New Year’s Eve will not only be a blast, but a small homecoming.
Oig grew up in Kamloops and spent time working at Sun Peaks before knuckling down with his music career. A self-taught musician, Oig first got serious about singing Jack Johnson inspired pop/folk songs in 2008, but the past year has seen a significant change in his musical direction. After two pop/folk albums, his new single, “Don’t Know What to Do” has followed his heart into the pop/electro domain.
“If you look up some of my old (music) there’s a huge difference in style (to my current music),” says Oig.
“Don’t Know What to Do” was originally the final track on Oig’s second album, Love, and was reworked with the help of renowned producer and songwriter Ryan Stewart. Oig says his work with Stewart was a real highlight of his musical career.
“I found Ryan online . . . (he said he) only works with signed artists so it’d probably be a ‘no,’ but to send (him) a video of (my music),” explains Oig. “The coolest thing about it was he said, ‘Your songs need work but the reason I want to work with you is because I feel like you’ve got the right attitude to make it big in the industry.’”
Oig has been remixing some of his acoustic songs to suit his new pop style and for his live shows.
“The cool thing . . . is that I have a live producer DJ who’s doing tracks with me right now. (He’s) a local house and dub step producer . . . who’s taken the style I want. We just took my old acoustics songs and pop-ified them.”
It’s been a whirlwind four years for Oig who’s toured across Canada and played countless local gigs in the Okanagan. As for 2013, Oig has high hopes. “It’s all one big giant question mark . . . (I) keep hoping it’s going to do well, making new tracks. I’ve got a production session lined up with another Canadian artist, Dirty Radio.”
Dan Oig is performing at Sun Peaks on New Year’s Eve starting at 6 p.m. at the base of the Sundance and Sunburst lifts.
