Fiber optic updates

MasconMascon Cable Systems Inc. (Mascon), Sun Peaks’ largest Internet and TV provider, in conjunction with Shaw Business, has undertaken a large project involving the installation of close to 80 kilometres of fibre optic cable running between Kamloops and Sun Peaks. The project was initially slated to be completed in November, 2013 but came upon a few hurdles and delays and is now set for a completion date in September of 2014.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience with this, it’s been a challenging undertaking for us but we’re truly excited about what’s upcoming,” explains Malcom Shattock, technical manager with Mascon.

Fiber optic cables provide a high-speed data connection allowing Mascon to offer “faster and more reliable Internet speeds,” says Shattock.

So what does this change mean for the community of Sun Peaks?

At this point, over 90 per cent of the homes serviced by Mascon have been converted to the digital receivers and transferred to at least the Basic Digital package, as the Basic Cable package will be rendered obsolete upon completion of the project. All residents who still have the classic analog cable channels have been asked to contact Mascon so they can complete the conversion.

“The exception is the hotels in the downtown core. We’re investing in a system to duplicate the existing channel 2 to 54 lineup in a digital format that connects directly to a flat screen TV with a digital tuner,” explains Shattock “Once connected, these TVs will seem like they’re getting channels 2 to 54 but, in actual fact, they’re receiving digital services with over 50 per cent of the channels being in HD format. This product enables a smooth transition for the hotels with the large number of rooms they manage.”

With the installation of new hardware comes faster Internet packages; Mascon will be offering  25 megabyte, 50 Mb and 100 Mb download speeds. The new hardware also means improved service for existing customers and the ability keep up with increased Internet demands into the future.

The increased Internet speeds don’t stop at Sun Peaks either; the fibre optic cable was also routed from Sun Peaks down to Whitecroft, Big Heffley Lake and Little Heffley Lake.

Something to keep in mind for many homeowners in the community is that the conversion is required for all suites on the contract. Rental suites that are still receiving the analog cable channels should also be converted with a digital receiver as the cable services will be cancelled and no longer accessible.
