FortisBC and Sun Peaks plan for emergency

 | September 12, 2012

On Tuesday, September 11 Fortis BC, in conjunction with Sun Peaks Utilities, Sun Peaks Fire Rescue, Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality, the RCMP and Gibson’s Trucking held a mock emergency training exercise at the Fortis BC Sun Peaks Propane Facility.

This full scale live exercise was held to test the effectiveness of all the departments in the events of a real propane emergency in the community. An emergency operation centre was set up within the Sun Peaks village as a central command during this extensive exercise to coordinate all parties.

Pat Miller, manager of Sun Peaks Utilities Co., was more than happy with the outcome.

“The inter-cooperation and communication between agencies was excellent and there were a lot of take-aways that will help us respond in the future,” said Miller. “This exercise is mandated by the federal government under their E2 regulations and while we have to practice a part of our emergency response plan every year, we also have to hold a full scale mock emergency exercise every 5 years. All the agencies involved really learned a lot from this live exercise which in the long run makes for a safer community.”
