Okay, ladies. The village is soon going to be buzzing with old friends back from overseas and new faces fresh to the mountain. What better way to get everyone together than a night in with a bottle of wine and a stack of tried-and-true chick flick favourites? Rave Reviews opens up the vault to bring you my Top 5 List of movies for the ladies.
The Devil Wears Prada: Remember that horrible woman that ran your work life last season? She ain’t got nothing on Meryl Streep who plays the domineering Miranda Priestly, high queen of fashion in this 2006 comedy, also starring Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt. Your best defence mechanism for this season will surely be acquiring Streep’s look of disdain and her favourite dismissive sentence: “That’s all.”
The Family Stone: This 2005 ensemble film may just be the perfect romantic comedy: an insanely talented cast, a clever script and a level of on-screen tension that will make you laugh until you cry, and vice-versa. Stone made an appearance in this column way back in 2006, and it still remains a personal favourite.
Legally Blonde: Reese Witherspoon manages to bring charm, poise and intelligence to the stereotypical dumb blonde character. If you’ve ever had anyone tell you that you’ll never be more than a lifty or a bartender, be sure to fast-forward directly to the scene where Elle Woods (Witherspoon) stomps out of a house party wearing a Playboy bunny outfit and declaring, “I’ll show you how valuable Elle Woods can be!”
The Thomas Crowne Affair: The 1999 remake of the original 1968 film may just be the sexiest movie of the last 10 years. Rene Russo and Pierce Brosnan will light your screen on fire with their complicated, smouldering seduction. Girls, be warned: by the end of the film, you’ll be ready to run off with the first single 40-year-old millionaire that propositions you.
Wimbledon: This is one of those rare gems that was underrated by the critics for being a typical romantic-comedy. While the story may not be earth-shattering, the dialogue is fun and chock-full of one-liners that’ll make their way into your personal lexicon. Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany are both delightful. In fact, Bettany may become your new favourite British import . . . right behind that busload of English snowboarders!
Whether you rent one or all of these back catalogue beauties, I can guarantee that a fun night will be had by all. Throw in some fuzzy slippers, flannel pyjamas and a couple of bags of popcorn and you and your friends will be ready to face the new ski season with big smiles and light hearts. Enjoy!
