With the Canada Cup, Demo Days, February First Friday and International Ski Patrol Day with Helly Hansen, this weekend isn’t lacking in things to do in Sun Peaks.
From Thursday, Feb. 6 until Sunday, Feb. 9, Canada Cup competitors will be participating in big air and slopestyle competitions on Sundance.
As DJs play off the Bottoms Bar and Grill patio for First Fridays, events and partnerships manager for Sun Peaks Resort LLP (SPR) Liz Wilkinson said the finals for the big air competition will have wrapped up and the activity in the resort will transition from a competition setting to live music and mingling.
On Saturday and Sunday, many stores in the village will provide ski and snowboard demos for folks to test out. Find your favourite, and while you’re at the base, stop by a tent set up for International Ski Patrol Day and vote on your favourite Sun Peaks patroller.
Canada Cup
Starting with a training day on Wednesday, Feb. 5, Wilkinson said the Sun Peaks Freestyle Canada Cup athletes will be in Sun Peaks until the final day of competitions on Sunday.
This NorAm event is run by Freestyle Canada, Freestyle BC and Sun Peaks Freestyle Club on both the black terrain park and the big jumps just below, built from dirt by Powder Ventures Excavating this summer.
Ten per cent of the 80 participants are women this year and the age range is mainly between 14 and 19.
On Friday night during the big air finals starting after the lifts close at 4 p.m. until around 7 p.m., Wilkinson said the course will be flood lit with snowmobiles operating to take people to the top.
First Fridays
After a summer of First Fridays, run by Tourism Sun Peaks (TSP), SPR is building on the title and expanding to the winter this February.
“The goal is, working with TSP and ourselves, that we eventually end up with the First Fridays 12 months a year,” Wilkinson said.
This Friday, Feb. 7, SPR has brought in a group of DJs as the main feature to perform from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. off the Bottom’s Bar and Grill patio.
This free concert features Smalltown DJs and Joanna Magik and includes the option for a VIP experience on the Bottom’s patio for $10.
Also part of First Fridays, the Village Platter and Tube Time will be running until 9 p.m.
Demo Days
Demo Days will also be running this weekend from Saturday, Feb. 8 to Sunday, Feb. 9.
Because of the cold temperatures, Demo Days will be based out of all the different stores in the village, where folks can test out skis and boards while checking out some of the special deals available.
“Most shops already do have a demo program,” she explained. “So all we’re doing is just really highlighting it and making it a focus for the visitors coming in so that they can actually go and try them.”
This weekend is a tag on from the Dealer Demo a couple of weeks ago which showcased skis and boards from different brands for next year.
International Ski Patrol Day
International Ski Patrol Day is this Monday, Feb. 10, and will be celebrated in Sun Peaks Saturday and Sunday as well.
“International Ski Patrol day is just celebrating the ski patrollers and bringing awareness to the ski patrol function all across the world,” Wilkinson said.
A tent will be set up at the Village Base in conjunction with Helly Hansen for guests to participate in a competition to vote for a favourite ski patroller.
“What we’ve done is we’ve spoken to all the patrollers and they’ve all given us a bit of a bio about themselves, a picture and everything like that,” she explained.
Using a QR code, voters can view these bios and cast their vote during all three days of the ongoing event.
The winning patroller with the most votes gets a clothing prize from Helly Hansen and each voter is entered into a draw to win a prize from Helly Hansen as well.
