Local sisters embrace the giving spirit

AdamsBW Madi and Ryleigh Adams are no strangers to lending a hand for a cause. The Grades 3 and 5 sisters have chosen to accept money for causes in lieu of birthday presents for the past several years.

“No one asked us too,” the sisters agreed. “We just wanted to.”

Their most recent venture raised almost $400 to buy books for their school, the Sun Peaks Elementary School.

“We raised money for books because we love to read,” explained Ryleigh. “We thought it’d be fun to raise money and get everyone going on it.”

Their mom, Catherine, explains that the girls have always been keen to help out where they can. Last year the girls collected funds to buy hula hoops and sports equipment for their school too.

Ryleigh’s first fundraising effort raised money to help support Molly, a baby undergoing cancer treatments in Vancouver. At the same time Madi donated money to support the medical care of an infant who was injured, and whose twin died, in a house fire.

“We wanted to raise money so she could survive,” said Madi.

With birthdays only six days apart, the girls are well positioned to organize joint fundraisers. Do they have plans for next year? Ryleigh suggested she’s thinking of supporting children. And, with a knowing twinkle in her eye, Madi kept closed-lipped.

“I know,” Madi said, “but I’m not going to say just yet.”
