Nothing like a weekend of hip hop and reggae

The snow has fallen, the season has started and that means life is in full swing on the mountain, musically as well!
Life on the mountain is heating up and nightlife has returned to the joy of ski bums, visitors and die-hard locals alike. A couple of upcoming events stand out in particular: Mystic Bowie, a reggae funk band playing at Masa’s Bar and Grill on Dec. 5 and Gift of Gab, of Blackalicious, at Club Mackdaddy’s on Dec. 4. A fun-packed weekend to celebrate snow and good beats!
Mystic Bowie—and yes that’s his real name—given to him by Jamaican Maroon Tribe elders, is touring to celebrate the current release of his latest album Nevah Kiss & Tell. Having toured worldwide for festivals and concerts, he’s no newcomer to the stage.
Mystic Bowie is known for both the single “Mama”, recorded at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, Jamaica and another track “Who Feelin’ It” which was featured in 2000’s American Psycho, an urban thriller directed starring Christian Bale among others. Mystic Bowie has also performed alongside greats the B-52s, Trey Anastasio of Phish and Warren Haynes.
With Never Kiss & Tell, Mystic Bowie will be bringing some of that warm island vibe with his feel-good lyrics—a great way to loosen up those stiff skiing muscles!
But if you’re a weekend warrior you might want to also hit up another excellent show, one of the biggest names to make an appearance at Sun Peaks: Gift of Gab.
Gift of Gab is half of hip hop sensation Blackalicious and is touring after the recent release of his hit new album Escape 2 Mars. The highly talented and entertaining MC, born Timothy Parker has been on numerous side projects such as The Mighty Underdogs, as well as releasing his solo debut five years ago called 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up.
Escape 2 Mars, Gift of Gab’s second release is not as space-based as 4th Dimension Rocketships, it still focuses on planetary problems like global warming and the exploitive medical industry—“Electric Waterfalls”.
Escape 2 Mars also features some key cameos such as “Dreamin’” with Del the Funky Homosapien and Brother Ali, as well as appearances from Lateef, Joyo Velarde and Honeycut frontman Bart Davenport.
Needless to say Dec. 4’s show will be bouncing with heavy beats from the get-go and this Oakland, California rapper will be rocking Club Mackdaddy’s until every last ski bum has been booted out by the bouncers.
