Sporting infrastructure a focus for Municipality

HockeySun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality will prioritize the completion of the full-sized ice rink and the development of the soccer and softball fields throughout 2015.

Mayor Al Raine said the outdoor ice rink would be completed in time for the 2015-16 winter season, after the municipality was recently granted the title for the 4.5 hectares of land the ice rink will be constructed on.

“We’ve got a lot of the prep work done. We were able to do most of the prep work last fall, and we’ve now completed a stream crossing in the last month to allow access for utilities,” Raine said.

The next stage will be the laying of concrete and the construction of a refrigeration plant to ensure ice-quality throughout winter.

“Even if we have mild-temperatures like we have had this winter, we will still be able to maintain super good ice for skating.”

In the longer term the municipality would also look at an application to expand the ice rink facility with a roof, allowing the rink to be used as a facility for summer concerts, trade shows or special events outside of the winter season.

Raine said he was optimistic that the soccer and softball field behind the tennis courts would also be ready for use this year, and said he would love to see a Sun Peaks softball league in the summer months.

“I’m hopeful there could be a social league with employees and hotels and businesses putting together teams. It’s certainly been very popular in Whistler and it could be a really popular thing for summer employees.”
