Sun Peaks will play host to an adventure race where competitors must track their way to undisclosed locations by paddling, mountain biking and trekking without access to a GPS.
Adventure Immersion Lab’s final race of the summer will take place Aug. 17. Their competitions have included an urban race in Kelowna, an off-road duathlon in Kamloops and a three-and-a-half day staged race in Abraham Lake in Alberta.
Adventure Immersion Lab is a year-old Kelowna-based company owned by Nathalie Long, who said their races range from a couple hours to three-and-a-half days. They run winter events as well involving snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
Registration for the Sun Peaks adventure race included the option for different ages and skill levels to enter either a four hour race and an eight hour race, categorized by male, female and non-binary solo competitors or male, female and co-ed duo teams.
With the variety of options, Long said the four hour race will have some family duos that include kids as well as adults.
Sun Peaks Adventure Race
After visiting Sun Peaks, Long said it was the perfect location to host an adventure race.
Though the vast location coverage of the event must remain a mystery, she said the racers will be paddling on McGillivray Lake.
“They’re only going to have a map and compass to navigate,” she explained, adding these will be used to find flags at different checkpoints in the form of a scavenger hunt.
Whoever finds the most points within the time limit wins the race.
From 7 a.m. on, competitors will come and receive their maps. At 8 a.m., the eight hour race will kick off followed by the four hour race at 9 a.m.
Spectators are welcome at the start and finish and if people want to take a look at the racers’ maps after 7 a.m., they can find the transition areas where they may want to cheer people on as they switch from paddling to trekking or whatever it may be.
Sponsored by Runners Sole and True Outdoors, Long said there will be prizes for the top three of each category, as well as draw prizes.
“We like to move the event a little bit because of the orienteering piece of it,” she said. “But if it works well in Sun Peaks, we may do another race there.”
