Sun Peaks Alpine Fitness is launching a Youth Performance Program to help young people develop training habits with the help of coach Jesse Hallett.

Through the program, Hallett, who holds a Master’s degree in exercise science and has published papers on coaching youth athletes, will support youth at different stages of development.

“His background brings an evidence-based approach to youth development, with a focus on strength training, movement quality, long-term progression and helping young athletes train in a way that supports both performance and injury prevention,” gym owner Jase Petersen wrote to SPIN via email.

The program will include three groups, one for ages 10 to 13 who are new to the gym or need a bit more confidence in a gym environment.

The remaining two groups are for those 14 and older, one for regular training sessions and the other a more structured, progression-based group focused on commitment and accountability.

“There are youth out there that aren’t necessarily looking to be competitors or athletes. They just want to be involved in healthy habits and training in the gym,” Petersen explained. “Getting them in at an early age and developing those habits is crucial. Especially with all the activities and stuff that they do, injury prevention is key.”

The program was developed in collaboration with Sun Peaks Freestyle Club through a pilot run last year, and feedback from that pilot helped shape the program’s structure.

“One thing we’ve wanted to keep building at Alpine Fitness is a wider range of training options for the community,” Petersen said. “The Youth Performance Program is part of that, giving kids an opportunity to grow, whether it’s through general fitness or athlete development.”

Registration will open on April 20, and the program will begin the week of April 27. Early registration is available to Sun Peaks Freestyle Club athletes.
