Racers representing the Sun Peaks Alpine Club (SPAC) caused quite a stir racing in Silver Star, dominating the competition at the 2015 U14 TECK Provincial Championships from February 26 to March 1.

Local racer Liam Applegath was at the top of his game throughout the weekend, winning five out of his six races, and claiming top spot on the podium as the Overall U14 Provincial Champion. Josh Jacoby also put in a strong performance to finish in third place overall, while Beckett Hooton finished in sixth place.

The female division was well represented with red Sun Peaks Racers jackets as well: Emily Whitecross had an amazing weekend, celebrating her 14th birthday with first, second, third and fourth place finishes, seeing her ranked as third overall female.

Montana Molyneux, head coach for SPAC, also commended racers Erin Cope, Joel Elias, Colton Kovacs and Halle Smith for their strong performances over the weekend.

“It was great to see so many SPAC jackets in the Overall Top 10 for the men and to have Emily on the podium for the women. With a small team of 10 we definitely had a presence at provincials this year,” Molyneux said.

The club’s success saw five athletes quality for the U14 Can Am race in Revelstoke on March 19 to 22, featuring the top U14 racers from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest United States. Three Sun Peaks Racers (Applegath, Jacoby and Whitecross) have also been selected to compete for Team B.C. at the Whistler Cup in April.
