The makings of a local

Publisher’s Note

Sun Peaks is finally becoming a winter wonderland once again as skiers and boarders from around the globe wait patiently for the lifts to open on Nov. 14.

A sure sign of a new winter season approaching are black bears roaming the streets at night looking for food before hibernation. Please, all new residents, don’t leave any garbage outside as it might be your garbage that ends up killing a bear.

Another sure sign of winter approaching is the new employees and residents starting to arrive en masse. While many part-time residents and newcomers to this great resort town like to feel like “locals” during their stay here, there are a few things that truly set Sun Peaks locals and others apart.

“True” locals never, ever walk on Sun Peaks Road during the winter; it’s a dark, unlit snow-covered highway with no sidewalk. “True” locals either hitchhike from the mail boxes across from the Fire Hall or walk the well-lit Valley Trail. It only takes five minutes more from Staff Housing and could save your life.

“True” locals are courteous, friendly and welcoming to everyone they meet especially guests and visitors from around the globe; after all they’re the reason we all have jobs and businesses.

“True” locals don’t go out to the bars and end up in fights. It’s about as cool as drinking and driving—not cool.

“True” locals don’t litter the chairlifts, ski runs, village walkways or roadways with empty beer cans, bottles, cigarette butts, or anything else.

“True” locals don’t ski out of bounds without area knowledge and proper preparation.

Last but not least “true” Sun Peaks locals love where they live, truly enjoy all that Sun Peaks Resort has to offer and work hard to keep it that way. Whether you’re moving here full-time or are just here for the winter season, try your best to be a “true” Sun Peaks local and have a safe and happy winter season.
