He went expecting to pick up his Most Popular Driver award at the NASCAR Night of Champions, but in addition to that, Jason White also came home with the 2011 Driver Achievement Award, an honour he didn’t expect.
“It’s voted on by the officials and NASCAR itself, so it was very humbling,” says White.
The award is presented to the driver who best exemplified the greatest level of growth throughout the racing season.
“It’s an award they give out every year to somebody who has achieved the highest level of driving ability in the sport,” notes White.
The awards were presented at the NASCAR Night of Champion’s annual Touring Banquet in Charlotte, N.C., where White and his wife, Melissa, enjoyed the southern hospitality.
“It’s a very clean city, with very friendly people and they rolled out the red carpet for us,” says White, who’s already making plans for the 2012 racing season.
“Come Jan. 1 we’re going to be full on into promotional mode and getting contracts firmed up,” he says, acknowledging that while racing is the fun part, it’s only about five per cent of the job.
“The rest of the work happens in the boardrooms with corporations.”
Fans can look forward to more contact with White as he plans his social media campaign for the New Year as well.
“We’ll be doing some fan activation and engagement through social media and some prize giveaways to start getting the buzz going for the first race.”
White’s NASCAR season gets underway in May, 2012.
