A grant for the record books

DiscoveryCentreThe Sun Peaks Education Society (SPES) has been approved for a $45,000 grant that tops the charts for local grant funding.

The grant, which will be used to expand and grow the Discovery Centre for Balanced Education at Sun Peaks, was provided by the Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust (SIDIT). SIDIT is focused on supporting economic development initiatives that will demonstrate long term measurable economic impact within the Southern Interior.

“(The Trust) is proud to be a part of this project,” states Grace McGregor, SIDIT chair. “Schools are often the heart of the community and taking care of the education needs of the residents will retain and attract new residents to Sun Peaks.”

Plans for the allocation of the funding include high speed Internet, Smart Boards and computers and additional classroom equipment, all of which will, in turn, contribute to securing long term operation funding. SPES believes the grant will facilitate both job creation and employee retention in the community.

“We’re thankful for SIDIT’s support of this project,” says Barb Kupferschmidt Linder, president of the SPES. “Seventy five per cent of the parents, currently, are employed in the resort. These are people working in the community and wanting their kids to also stay in the community. For our enrolment for 2013-14, it represents over 65 students. We are truly grateful to SIDIT for its grant and for parents in Sun Peaks it’s priceless.”

With this grant, the community of Sun Peaks continues to grow towards a future filled with opportunity and sustainable resources.
