ArtZone Sun Peaks has been about getting art publicized and displayed in the village. This summer, leading up to a festival in September, there will be displays of art each Sunday on summer market days, President Marj Knive said.
After a reimagining of ArtZone in 2019 where the organization discussed implementing a five-year plan of what they could be, there have been different events and displays which are continuing to grow and bring more artists and admirers of art together in the community.
“Our artists have exhibitions in guest services and in the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel, upstairs and downstairs, and in Vertical Cafe and Tourism Sun Peaks,” Knive said.
They’ve also presented to the municipal council pieces of art soon to be displayed in the conference and boardroom at Sun Peaks Centre and orchestrated a contest to choose new banners for the valley trail which will be unveiled this summer in June or July.
Market days
Beginning in June, ArtZone Sun Peaks will have a tent set up at each Sunday market this summer.
Four of the tents throughout this time will have children’s activities.
“The rest of the time, we have our member artists who are taking turns to display their artwork,” Knive said.
Their membership expands beyond Sun Peaks, she said, with artists from all over displaying a diverse mix of art. Some of this includes woodworking, pine needle weaving, fibre art, copper art and photography.
Sunday Markets will start June 9.
“We’re going to be doing the first Friday markets as well,” she said. These are from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on July 5, Aug. 2 and Sept. 6.
CREATE! Arts and Craft Festival
From Sept. 6 through Sept. 8, ArtZone will host the second annual CREATE! Arts and Craft Festival, including art workshops and displays in the village.
“Last year we had flower arranging, plein air painting, still life painting, musicians…we brought out the village piano and had concerts,” Knive said, adding “we had a silk scarf painting workshop, we had all sorts of things like that.”
She informed SPIN that they’re hoping to have new musicians this year, as well as introducing a blacksmithing workshop.
While ArtZone was pleased with how last year’s festival turned out, they are collaborating with other community organizations to bolster the event this year.
“We realized just how much it takes to make the village seem busy,” she said. “We’re working with Tourism Sun Peaks and the resort, and we’re collaborating to make it even bigger and better than last year.”
