Your artwork could soon be displayed on Sun Peaks’ Valley Trail banners.

Sun Peaks Resort LLP (SPR), Tourism Sun Peaks and Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality (SPMRM) are collaborating with ArtZone Sun Peaks to fund and produce new banners for the Valley Trail network. Artists near and far can submit work inspired by Sun Peaks until April 14th. The theme is: Essence of Sun Peaks, what Sun Peaks means to you.

Parameters for submissions can be found on ArtZone’s website. The banner could be a single panel or two side-by-side pieces of art. Applications should be in high resolution and fit within the template dimensions for the banners. Up to four artisan’s designs could be waving proudly on Sun Peaks’ Valley Trail banners for years to come, and the artists’ names will be displayed as well.

ArtZone collects submissions and hands them over to SPR and TSP, which will choose which art will grace the paths of the village.

Each winning artist receives $1,500 for their work, split between TSP and SPR.

There’s also the potential to have the banners printed and sold in the village, per the contract artists sign when submitting their work.

The collaboration came after ArtZone initially approached SPR about tackling the banners a few years ago, according to Marj Knive, ArtZone president. When the time came to revamp the banners, Christina Antoniak, director of communications for SPR, said they tapped the organizers at ArtZone.

Having art displayed in public presents an opportunity most artists won’t want to pass by.

“Being able to say that your banner is the one that’s up in Sun Peaks… there’ll be a certain amount of notoriety that comes along with that,” Knive said. “I think being able to have your art visible in a public place is always of benefit to artists.”

Installation is slated for the end of May or early in June, ahead of summer operations.

Whether designs include snowflakes or snowshoeing, or fabulous flora and fauna, different artists will have unique attachments to Sun Peaks Antoniak said, explaining why the theme is broad.

“We didn’t want to pigeonhole the theme…I think when we all reflect on what Sun Peaks means to us, we probably have different core memories and visuals that come to mind about our experiences in Sun Peaks and really kind of what hits home,” Antoniak said.

Antoniak added the company producing the new banners also has an end-of-life plan that will keep the retired banner material out of landfills and potentially to a store near you.

“The banners that we’re going to be taking down, they go back into a program with the vendor called Banners to Bag… a textile recycling program,” she said. “Any ones that are a decent quality, they actually produce them back into reusable shopping bags and there’s an opportunity for us to buy them back and then sell them in the community.”

Knive noted artisans who’ve crafted creations for Sun Peaks Centre can resubmit their work for Sun Peaks’ Valley Trail banners. The selection committee for art at Sun Peaks Centre is still busy deciding whose art will go on to the next round of judging by SPMRM.

“We got a huge number of submissions, so it’s been really hard to come up with what we think will work,” Knive said.
Other ongoing ArtZone initiatives include a World of Food contest that ran March 16 and an Anonymous Art Show and Sale slated for March March 28 to 31.
