It’s always exciting when a Sun Peaks local can find their niche, and a bonus when they take that talent and translate it into a career. Sun Peaks local at heart, Tim Lange (a.k.a. CrashCourse), is living his dream as he rapidly becomes recognized for his DJ’ing talents.
Originally calling Sun Peaks home to gain recognition for his freestyle snowboarding abilities, Lange found his life needed an overhaul and Dom Koric had the answer. What started as a curious intuition quickly spiralled into a passion as Koric introduced Lange to the DJ scene. Acting as his mentor, Lange credits Koric for teaching him “everything (he) knows about DJ’ing and music production,” and the two perform together, under the name Perv’ Stache, whenever they can find the time.
Lange’s own stage name, CrashCourse, was born out of the snowboarding road that brought him to the mountains.
“My mom called me ‘crash’ because I was always injured,” explains Lange. “A lot of people around Sun Peaks know the meaning of my name — I always had a broken shoulder or (was in) some crash.”
Lange has risen quickly through the DJ’ing ranks, only beginning to mix in 2011, and to produce less than a year ago. He attributes his initial success to his stage presence and ability to get in touch with his audience, but now considers his success as having a lot to do with his mixing abilities and what he describes as his “ability to capture every moment in a song and make that track really go off.”
Koric sees Lange’s new-found talents as just the beginning.
“I think he’s got a really strong start,” says Koric. “He’s definitely got that edge.”
Taking every chance he could to gain experience in the circuit, Lange took his talents on the road for the festival season last summer, scoring some investors and a management team, 5D Paradigm Productions.
“(Management said) ‘This is your job now, just go home and forget about all the stuff you worried about before and just enjoy writing music,’ ” says Lange. “So basically that’s what I’ve been doing since August now — locked down in my studio writing music. I never thought I’d get to (call myself a professional musician)!”
“I just want to give (5D) a shout out, and Basebong Records, as well as Dom, Sun Peaks, all my friends and everyone for supporting what I do.”
Now that his career is taking off, Tim hopes to continue to create and release a lot more music. DJ CrashCourse will be releasing his first EP called The Finer Things for Basebong Records (out of Kelowna) on December 2, 2013 at The Club in Sun Peaks.
The EP includes three songs plus a bonus track. Personalized copies of The Finer Things will be sold at the show for $5.
He also plans on releasing another EP this winter, as well as continuing to release free downloads on soundcloud.com. He’s collaborating with some other artists now, and is getting ready to tour between Edmonton, Alta. and Vancouver Island this winter. A bigger tour into the United States is on the radar for next summer.
