Quilters retreat a sell-out event

QuiltingThe Sun Peaks Quilters Guild held a sold-out Quilting in the Mountains event July 14 to 18.

The 10th annual event hosted 16 participants from as far as Vancouver, Horsefly and Valemount, who joined local quilters from Sun Peaks and Kamloops, to hone their quilting skills, share ideas and socialize.

With the return of their resident instructor, Dianne Jansson, the theme for this years’ design and colour class was Storm at Sea.

“Quilting is a lifelong addiction,” explained Pat Miller founder of the Sun Peaks Guild. “It’s creative, it’s technical and you get something useful at the end of it.”

The social aspect of the Quilting in the Mountains retreat was also a highlight.

“There’s not any nicer people than quilters,” said Joanne Douglas, a Sun Peaks quilter.

Miller and Douglas were proud to showcase a charity quilt the group had been working on — one of two quilts the group will donate to a good cause upon completion.

“These are comfort quilts that are given to people in need, whether they’re victims of a fire, an accident, or domestic issues,” said Miller.

Plans for next years’ event are already under way, with intentions of including a quilt show and quilter’s merchant mall.

“The theme will be modern quilting based on traditional designs, with more details to come,” Miller said.
